Mission Statement
The mission of the Holocaust Education network is to strengthen the conditions for a just and humane life in society by collecting and disseminating knowledge and information concerning the Holocaust (1939-45).
The commitment of this network is based on the recognition that the historical lessons of the Holocaust are of profound importance to people of all races, religions, and ethnic backgrounds.
While the teaching of the Holocaust has been mandated by a number of states, many teachers are provided with little or no training as well as access to proper materials. This network will serve as a forum to further the understanding of the events of the Holocaust by focusing on the historical context as well as the myriad of instructional strategies requisite to understanding the past, sensitizing students to the causes and consequences of these events, and recognizing the need to be actively involved in preventing future genocides.
Note: We wish to credit Jeffrey Glanz, Leslie Williams-Jenkins, Gerry Melnick, and Connie Donvito, the first facilitators of this network group (circa 2001-02) for the creation of this mission statement. When we attempted to reapply for network status in 2005, we were presented with the original statement. While a few changes were made, it is our contention that this statement is most appropriate as is. We wish to thank the former facilitators for their ideas and words.
